Dr. Fernando Hernández
Periodontist at Arroyo & Hernández Dental Clinic

What is periodontics?
It is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the health of your gums and the tissue that supports your teeth. If you have ever had sore, swollen or bleeding gums, this is the field that deals with it.
Periodontics sets out to prevent, diagnose and treat conditions such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (a more serious form that affects the bone and the tissue holding the teeth in place).
Why choose us for your gum treatment?
Specialist experience: a highly qualified periodontist with extensive experience treating gum disease.
Advanced technology: it lets us treat more precisely and more effectively.
A focus on prevention: we help you keep your gums and your mouth healthy.
Tailored treatment: every patient is different, so we build a treatment plan around what your case needs.
Gum disease cases in Alicante
These are some examples of the cases we treat at our dental clinic

Gum treatments in Alicante
We offer several treatments depending on how advanced the gum disease is. These are some of them.
Scaling and root planing
A non-surgical treatment: a deep clean of the tooth roots to remove the plaque and tartar built up in the periodontal pockets. It works well in the early stages of gingivitis and periodontitis.
Curettage
Used mainly in the early stages of gum disease, curettage removes the bacterial plaque built up on the tooth surface and along the gum line. It may need local anaesthetic and is done in one or two sessions.
Surgical treatment
In advanced periodontitis we may need surgery: flap surgery, soft tissue grafts or bone grafts. These treatments aim to repair and regenerate the damaged tissue.
Gum and bone grafts
Gum grafts treat receding gums; bone grafts are needed when the disease has affected the bone around the root. Both improve how stable the teeth are and how the gums look.
What happens during gum treatment
Free first visit
Your first periodontal appointment at our clinic in Alicante is free. During it we assess the state of your mouth and gums.
Diagnosis and planning
Based on that assessment we give you a clear diagnosis and build a treatment plan. It may involve non-surgical treatment such as scaling and root planing or, if needed, surgery.
The treatment itself
Depending on your case this ranges from deep cleaning to more complex surgery such as gum or bone grafts. The aim is always to get the most out of the treatment.
Follow-up
After treatment we schedule follow-up appointments to check how you are healing and how your gums are doing. We also show you how to look after them at home: brushing technique and flossing.
Check-ups
Regular visits are what keep your gums healthy in the long run. They let us spot and treat anything new early.
