What is ozone therapy?

Dental ozone therapy is an innovative therapeutic technique in dentistry that uses medical ozone, a mixture of oxygen and ozone, to treat a range of oral conditions.

It draws on medical ozone’s germicidal, healing, re-oxygenating, antioxidant and immune-modulating properties, with multiple benefits.

Medical ozone is used in dentistry to speed up tissue healing after periodontal procedures, to treat gum disease, mouth ulcers and tooth decay, and to help hard and soft tissue heal.

It is also effective against cold sores and lesions of the mucous membranes, for killing bacteria in the root canals during endodontic treatment, for managing dry socket, in teeth whitening, and for disinfecting instruments and prostheses.

Among the notable benefits of dental ozone therapy are fewer bacterial infections, natural healing, less tooth sensitivity, halting tooth decay and better outcomes for other dental treatments.

La application of medical ozone in dentistry is done with specialised devices that deliver ozone gas, ozonated oil or ozonated water directly onto the teeth, gums or soft tissue.

What is ozone therapy used for?

At our clinic in Alicante we use the “Ozone DTA” unit: the ozone concentration and application times are preset so the treatment is effective and safe for the patient.

Disinfection

The Ozone DTA is effective at disinfecting cavities and root canals. Applying ozone kills a wide range of microorganisms, leaving a cleaner treatment area and reducing the risk of infection after surgery.

Gum disease

The unit is ideal for treating gum disease. Ozone works in the periodontal pockets, helping control infection and improving the health of the gums and surrounding tissue.

Healing after surgery

The Ozone DTA speeds up healing after surgery and extractions. It reduces swelling and accelerates healing, so you get back to your normal routine sooner.

Cold sores and ulcers

It also helps with mouth ulcers and herpes lesions. The ozone reduces inflammation and speeds up healing, easing the pain and discomfort.

How ozone therapy works

Preparation

Before starting we explain the process and answer any questions. No special preparation is needed, but it helps to be relaxed and comfortable.

Applying the ozone

We use the OZONE DTA to apply ozone directly to the affected area. Depending on the treatment, that may be directly onto the teeth and gums or with a syringe to reach specific spots.

How long it takes

The application is usually short, often just a few minutes. It is quick, painless and non-invasive.

Monitoring

Afterwards we check that there are no adverse effects and see how you respond initially, and we set up follow-up as needed.
