What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is carried out when the dental pulp is infected or damaged, which can be caused by deep decay, fractures or infection.
During the procedure, the damaged or infected pulp is removed from inside the tooth. The root canal is then carefully cleaned and disinfected before being sealed to prevent further infection.
The main aim of root canal treatment is to save the natural tooth, removing the pain and the infection while keeping the tooth working as it should.

Types of root canal treatment in Alicante
This is what a root canal can involve, depending on the tooth and how complex the case is.
Single-canal root treatment
This is done on teeth with a single root canal, such as incisors, canines and some premolars. The pulp is reached through that one canal, the damaged tissue is removed, the canal is cleaned and disinfected, and then sealed.
Two-canal root treatment
Suitable for teeth with two root canals, such as some upper premolars. It involves working on two separate canals, each cleaned, cleared of infected pulp and sealed individually.
Multi-canal root treatment
Used on teeth with three or more root canals, typically molars. With more canals and a more complex anatomy, the treatment takes longer and demands more precision.
Restoring the tooth
After a root canal the tooth usually needs restoring, especially if it was fractured or had very deep decay. That often means fitting a crown to protect it and bring back both its function and its appearance.
What happens during root canal treatment
Free first visit
Treatment starts with a consultation where we examine the affected tooth. We use X-rays to assess how far the pulp is damaged and to decide whether a root canal is the right option.
Preparation
At the next appointment we prepare the tooth. This normally includes local anaesthetic so the procedure is as comfortable as possible.
Cleaning the canals
We open the crown of the tooth to reach the damaged pulp. The infected tissue is removed and the root canals are cleaned carefully with specialised instruments.
Sealing the canals
Once clean, the canals are shaped and prepared for sealing. Materials such as gutta-percha are used to fill and seal them, leaving no space where bacteria could settle.
Restoring the tooth
The last step is restoring the tooth to its normal shape and function, usually with a crown or another restoration that protects and strengthens it.
