What to do before and after a clean

A few things are worth doing before and after the treatment. This is the advice we usually give at our dental clinic in Alicante.

Before

Keep up your oral hygiene: brush and floss so that your teeth are clean before the appointment.

Tell us about your dental health: let your dentist know about any problem you are having, such as sensitivity or bleeding gums.

Avoid acidic food and drink: on the day, steer clear of anything that could irritate your gums, such as citrus fruit or fizzy drinks.

Arrive on time: get here a few minutes early to fill in any paperwork and settle in before the procedure.

After

Avoid very hot or cold food and drink: your teeth may be sensitive after the clean, so stick to food and drink at room temperature.

Follow your dentist’s advice: use mouthwash or the dental care products your dentist recommends to keep the results of the clean.

Watch for bleeding: if your gums are still bleeding after 24 hours, call us so we can take a look.

Avoid drinks that stain: it is best to wait a day before drinking coffee, tea or cola.

If you smoke: try to cut down as much as you can to avoid staining your teeth.

Initial examination and planning

A thorough examination of your teeth and gums. We use special instruments to find where plaque and tartar have built up, and assess the overall health of your mouth.

Removing tartar and plaque

We use ultrasonic devices and hand instruments to remove the plaque and tartar on your teeth. The ultrasonic vibrations loosen the larger deposits; the hand instruments reach the harder spots.

Polishing

Once the plaque and tartar are gone, we polish your teeth with a special paste. It removes surface staining and leaves the teeth smooth and shiny.

Fluoride application (optional)

At least once a year. It depends on the person, though: patients with gum disease or a lot of tartar may need one every 3 to 6 months. Your dentist will tell you the right interval for you.
